  • Is your network down?
    .
For my book I'm interviewing people to hear their stories and perspective about networking.

Recently I had the privilege of speaking with Pam Alexander from Alexander Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide. She is on numerous boards and is active with several conferences and associations. She was incredibly enthusiastic about the role that networking has played in her success.

We spoke extensively about how networking is much more than a one time occurrence. In fact if you want to know as someone who's in the loop, you need to stay connected to people. After all, you don't want your network to go down!

"Networking is a recurring commitment" were her words of wisdom. If there are people you have lost track of, make the decision now to reconnect.

Be honest - tell them you heard it in an email newsletter from me!

If you are realizing that you have indeed lost touch with people, here are a few things to do:

  • Make the decision you will NEVER let it happen again
  • Make a list of all the people you know and categorize them. For example, work colleagues, neighbors, softball team, beach buddies, etc.
  • Step back and look at the list - who would like to meet each other
  • Write out what problems you solve - for example a CPA helps people with their financials, a salesperson helps businesses grow, etc.
  • Make several introductions
  • Do it for them, not you

When they ask what you are up to, tell them what you do.

For the McGraw-Hill book, I'm interviewing people on how networking has contributed to their success. If you can make an introduction, let me know. Here are some of the names:

  • David Letterman
  • Tiger Woods
  • Carly Fiorina
  • Diane Sawyer
  • Elton John
  • Ben Affleck
  • Matt Damon
  • Kevin Bacon

If you can make an introduction or you know someone who would be interesting to interview, please send an email with "Book Interview" in the subject line to Book Interview.

Happy August - we'll connect again in September!

    Email Strategies
    Subject Line
This is PRIME real estate. Use it wisely. Make the subject line entice people to open your email.

    Attachments
When including a proposal or resume, name the document with the receiver in mind. "Resume v.3" can quickly get lost in a recruiting agency and if the company is expecting several proposals, be sure yours stands out.

    Signature
PLEASE be sure your contact information is attached to every email. It's aggravating when the receiver wants to call and the phone number isn't there. Make it EASY for people to get in touch.
