  • Dear Laura,

The holiday party season has arrived! Last night I went to my first party and was reminded of some dos and don'ts.

    Egg nog and networking!

Effective Networking is featured in today's Wall Street Journal. Page B6 .... check out the networking hints.

    Holiday Networking Techniques
Here are some hints to make your holiday parties most effective for networking.

  • Try on your tuxedo or dress BEFORE the party, not the day of - just in case it shrank!
  • Gents, don't rattle the change in your pocket when talking to someone. It's VERY distracting!
  • Prepare several questions you can ask anyone at the party. For example, what is your connection to the host organization? How do you know the Jones?
  • Eat something before you arrive.
  • Have a glass of water in between drinks.
  • Carry breath mints.
  • Call people by name.
  • While the audience is business, keep the conversation light.
  • Don't discuss anything that could be miscontrued if overheard.
  • Say thank you to the host before you leave.

  • Teleclasses
I've been asked to test out offering teleclasses so you can learn effective networking techniques from the comfort of your couch.

    This month I'm offering two.

  • Networking Techniques @ Holiday Parties
  • Job Hunting Networking Techniques

At the holiday party teleclass, we'll discuss:

  • Should you talk about business?
  • When to give out a business card?
  • Ways to best prepare!
  • When is the best time to arrive?
  • Best ways to introduce yourself.
  • How do I start a conversation?
  • How to get out of one!?
  • Should I call to follow up or email?

If you read Scott Kirsner's column in yesterday's Boston Globe, you heard about the frustration people are experiencing when networking for jobs. According to Kirsner, no one's happy.

Employed people are burned out being invited for lunch and the unemployed are exhausted as well.

To read the article, go to The Boston Globe.

I'm offering a teleclass for job seekers to learn some effective networking techniques. It's still the best way to get a job and with a few tactics, you'll dramatically improve your networking efforts.

  • How to evaluate a networking opportunity
  • Best ways to get your phone calls returned
  • Email techniques for job hunters
  • Networking buddies - how to select them and what they do
  • How to inventory your present network
  • What to do if you haven't talked to someone in a long time
  • Some techniques to keep up your spirits during the holidays
