  • Dear Laura,

In honor of Valentine's Day, I thought I'd share with you what I learned a few weeks ago when I attended MIT Charm School. If you think I'm kidding, I'm not.

    MIT Charm School

Some of the courses taught were:

  • Flirting 101
  • Table manners
  • Joke telling 101
  • Cell phone etiquette
  • Ballroom dancing

    Here are a few highlights:

  • When you make a dinner reservation, you can always request a special table.
  • Practice jokes several times before you tell them. Never say things that will hurt someone's feelings.
  • Turn your phone off when you're on a date.
  • Don't talk with your mouth full.
  • Thank you and please are your two golden keys.
  • Give someone a 2nd chance if the first date didn't go well. They might have had a bad day.
  • Men should go through a revolving door first.

The place was just packed. There were hundreds of students from countries around the world learning "How to Accessorize" and "How to Make a Bow Tie." There were slightly more men than women attending.

  • If students attended 6 classes, they received a Bachelor in Charm.
  • With 8 classes, one could receive a Masters in Charm.
  • And with 12 classes, one would earn a Ph.D. in Charm.

The day ended with a graduation ceremony and fashion show. Congrats to all Charm School Grads!

Help your favorite schools and nonprofits
The good news: We frequently get requests from schools and nonprofits looking for networking programs to help students get jobs, help meet fundraising goals, or teach people the networking skills to build their organization.

The bad news: These organizations are lacking funding.

The opportunity for you: If there is a school or nonprofit you would like to champion, we'd be happy to work with you and the development department so you can sponsor a program and we'll offer a discount for your favorite organization.
