Dear Diane,
The other day I was walking in Boston and saw two people with their
dogs. The conversation went like this:
"This is Scooter." "Nice to meet you Scooter, this is
Pepper." "How old is Scooter?" "He's 3 and a German Shepard. Do you
like having a dog in the city?" "Yes, it's really fun and a terrific
way to meet people."
The conversation continued about the nice
weather and what a rough winter it's been - especially for the pups. At
the end, the two people said goodbye using the dog's names. It was so fun
to watch.
When I work with people who are especially nervous about approaching
people at conferences or parties, we start out by going for a walk and
talking to people with dogs. They (the people -- and most of the dogs) are
always friendly and you immediately have something to talk about.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to
be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run and greet them.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they have invaded your territory.
Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want is buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and
nuzzle him or her gently.
Thrive on attention.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water and sit under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
No matter how often you are scolded, don't buy the guilt thing
and pout, run right back and make friends.
This is an example of a networking techniques you'll find in The
Networking Survival Guide available now online and in bookstores in
mid-late April.
