Announcing its 4th printing!

Help yourself to a sneak preview

In a few months, PBS fans will have the opportunity to see a performance from Boston Pops performance from Symphony Hall featuring Vanessa Williams.

The other evening I was privileged to be there when Fidelity Investments took over the entire concert hall to watch the filming of the program.

As we watched, cameras sailed over our heads in their effort to get the best shot. After Vanessa's first song, the Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, in his typical spirited voice asked the audience if they liked the performance. There was a roar of applause.

He said, "That's great because you are going to see it again."

Over the course of the evening the audience saw Vanessa, two dancers and the Pops Orchestra perform three songs and repeat each one - so you the viewing audience at home would see the best program.

What does this have to do with networking?

During the reception prior to the concert I overheard people making conversation. For some it came easily and for others it was a strain.

While you may not be able to do a re-take, it is worth practicing and practicing and practicing so when it is your time to present ourselves, you will be confident, professional, and polished.

Before you head off to your next event - be it a picnic, concert, business meeting, conference - take a few minutes and practice three neutral questions you can ask anyone to get a conversation started. Ask open-ended questions that encourage the other person to share their thoughts or insights.

Others will be impressed and you will feel confident.

Happy Networking!
