Help yourself to a sneak preview

According to a 2002 study at the University of Massachusetts, during a 10 minute conversation, 60 percent of people tested lied at least once and told an average of two to three lies.

What is also quite interesting is that men and women lie for different reasons.

Researchers found women tend to lie to spare someone's feelings or to avoid conflict. Men tend to lie to make themselves seem more impressive, or to get something.

One of the most frequent times people lie while networking is when they want to end a conversation but do not want to hurt the person's feelings. So they say they are going to the bathroom or getting a drink only to turn around and find someone else to talk to.

This is unnecessarily stressful for all concerned. If you want to wind down the conversation, here are some tactful and truthful ways to do it.

  • Get a job at the event. For example if you are a host, you are expected to greet people. It's perfectly acceptable for you to exit. Be on a committee or at least be a volunteer.
  • Simply say, "It's been a pleasure speaking with you. I am sure our paths will cross again in the future." Shake hands and move on.
  • (Special note to women: Men shake hands hello and goodbye. Get in the habit of doing this and it makes the exit cleaner.)
  • Bring other people into your conversation. By engaging others, the topic can change. This is a way to transition out of a conversation you may not want to have.
  • Stay away from corners. This makes it look like you would rather be somewhere else and it's more difficult to move around.
  • Take a deep breath and just relax. It can feel awkward when exiting, but guess what - the other person might feel relieved that you made it easy for them to move along!

Most of our programs are private - however we have a few public ones coming up. We would be delighted to see you at one of them.
